Week 3 Story: Dasharatha's Sons

Image
Author's note: This is an alternate retelling of Dasharatha's Sons by Donald A. Mackenzie. In this story, King Dasharatha does not yet have an heir, so he performs Ashwamedha (horse sacrifice) so that the gods will grant him an heir. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Indra, and Maruts came down and promised the king that he will have four sons. Dasharatha's Sons , Donald A. Mackenzie King Steph Curry is desperate for a ring. The year is 2010 and although he has only been in the league for one year, he is desperate for a ring. Curry resolved to perform the secret ritual: tanking. He will purposely lose games so that the lottery gods will grant them a high draft pick, thus boosting the potential of getting a star basketball player. When he told the rest of his teammates, their faces lit up with joy. Bharata Returns , Donald A. Mackenzie Bharata was informed of his father's passing and was extremely upset. He wondered where Rama was and Kaikeyi told him that Rama was exiled and he was to be the new king. She also told him that she was the reason Rama got exiled. Reading Notes: Ramayana Part A

King Dasharatha , Donald A. Mackenzie: There were two kingdoms, Koshala and Mithila. Koshala was ruled by King Dasharatha, the father of Rama, and Mithila was ruled by King Janaka, the father of Sita. Dashratha, despite having everything in his palace (strong soldiers, priests, protection, prosperity), he was upset because he does not have a son. A compilation of Rama Wikipedia Commons Dasharatha's Sons , Donald A. Mackenzie Dasharatha performs Ashwamedha, a horse sacrifice, for the gods so that they can give him a boy. The sacrifice also required the wives to sit beside the horse and give portions of its body to the fire. The gods answered the ritual and promised that he would have four sons. Rama: Avatar of Vishnu , Donald A. Mackenzie A couple gods went to fight Ravana, so they consulted Vishnu. Vishnu then split himself into four which became the four sons of Dasharatha. Before he did, he told the gods that as a human, he will go fight Ravana and at that point the

Feedback Thoughts

Image
The two feedback articles I read were " A Simple 5-Second Habit to Rewire Your Harshly Self-Critical Brai n" and " How to Get Past Negativity Bias in Order to Hardwire Positive Experience. " The first article I read essentially talks about "rewiring" your brain. Instead of being so critical of yourself for any setback, just think of it like a minor setback and go back to what you were doing before. The important part, however, is making sure you congratulate yourself for going back to your task. Congratulating yourself for these small tasks leaves less room for being self-critical and can boost your self confidence. I actually agree with this a lot. As someone who beats themselves up for any small setback, reading something that can improve this flaw is really helpful. In the second article, it basically talks, similarly to the previous article, about rewiring your brain. This article, however, talks about rewiring your brain to not focus on the negatives

Indian Epics Topic Brainstorm

Image
Krisha the Hero: I am interested in this topic because the premise looks very interesting. A hero slaying demons appeals to me and I think it would make reading it very easy. Additionally, the premise is decently flexible to wear I can mold it to almost anything I want for the storybook. I don't have any prior knowledge but I would like to know exactly what types of demons he slay. The reason why is because I was thinking of doing a retelling of it in the form of iconic NBA playoff series, in which there are many times where an underdog has defeated an extremely strong team (the most recent example being the 2011 Dallas Mavericks vs Miami Heat series). This resource seems promising because it is a fast-paced retelling which allows me to fit it in terms of a 7 game playoff series, if needed. Arjuna and Krisha Wikipedia Epic Battles: Similar to Krisha the Hero, Epic Battles' premise is appealing to me. Since it is basically just a compilation of fights, it could b

Week 2 Story: Goblin City

Image
Author's note: This is an alternate retelling of the "Goblin City" in terms of Jalen Hurts and the University of Alabama football team. Bibliography: " Goblin City " from The Giant Crab, and Other Tales from Old India by W.H.D. Rouse University of Alabama's Football Stadium flickr In the faraway city named Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a high school football recruit and some of his friends crash landed at an unknown location that some call the University of Alabama or Bama for short. The female goblin, named Nick Saban, and his staff of goblins wanted those football players so bad, especially the captain Jalen Hurts. Saban and his staff convinced Jalen and his friends to stay in Bama. To do so, he created an illusion of happiness and prosperity. All of the football players seemed so excited and Saban put thoughts of winning multiple championships in Jalen's mind. This convinced Jalen so he decided to stay. Jalen had a lot of success early on and was

Reading Notes 2: Week 2 Anthology

Image
Goblin City by W.H.D Rouse Summary: There is this city on this island called Creylon that was home to she-goblins also known as rakshasas (male) / rakshasis (female). They would kidnap male travelers and forced them to marry them and once the goblins were tired of their husbands, they would eat them. A ship of sailors crashed on the island one day and the goblins convinced them to marry them. The sailors agreed, thinking that they were normal humans. Each night though, the goblins would go to the prison where they kept their old husbands and eat them. The captain of the sailors noticed one night that his wife was gone and found that she was eating humans. That was when he realized that their wives were actually goblins so he told the other sailors but only some of them believed him. A fairy, who hated goblins, just happened to be in the area and decided to save the sailors. So she had her flying horse come pick the sailors up. All the sailors that believed in the captain climbed ont

Week 2 Reading Overview

Image
For the projects, I have decided to choose the public domain version of the Ramayana. The main reason I chose it was because it is more convenient. I can access it from my laptop whenever I want. The audio version is also very helpful because I can listen to it while commuting. The two videos I have chosen are " Rama and Ramayana: Crash Course World Mythology #27 " and " Rama's route to Lanka (Rama vanvas - Ramayana). " The reason why I chose the first video is because it was made by CrashCourse. Generally, their videos are very high quality and entertaining. They also are great at explaining topics, so I think I would learn a lot of the basics of the Ramayana. I chose the second video because it'll help me visualize the route Rama took since I do not know anything about the setting. One of the battles in the Ramayana Victoria and Albert Museum The two comics I chose are " Rama: Retold from the Ramayana " and " Ganesha: The Remover

Time Strategies

Image
Last semester, I took a class where all of our homework was online. The homework was based off of readings and we had the ability to work ahead and finish all 15 assignments whenever we wanted. I decided to finish all of them in the first week of school and that was a major time-save during the semester. While the assignments weren't hard, they were time-consuming. Last semester was very hectic for me so the fact that I worked ahead had saved me multiple times. I plan on being at least a week ahead in my assignments for this class too. The two articles that I read were " How to Beat Procrastination " by Caroline Webb and " The Important Habit of Just Starting " by Jory Mackay. Both of the articles were pretty similar but they were helpful. One new thing that I learned in "How to Beat Procrastination" was thinking about the pros and cons associated with not starting a task. Most of the time, I think weigh the costs and benefits with starting a task bu

First Impression: Class Technology

Image
While I already have a lot of quality-of-life additions to my Chrome browser, I was not aware that there was a word counter tool so this addition will really help with my future classes! I am pretty familiar with most of these tools, especially bookmarking websites. That knowledge has been extremely helpful in my time at OU. I am very excited to learn how to create and manage a blog in this class. It was always something that I have been interested in but never got started on. Similar to the class assignments, I like how all of the information is laid out for us to see. Looking forward to my first online class Wikipedia

First Impression: Class Assignments

Image
Epics of India is the first online class I have ever taken so I was not sure how to feel about it coming in. After reading through the class assignments outline, I feel a lot better about the class. I really appreciate how the  expectations and extra credit opportunities are laid out for us to see from the very beginning. Everything seems very straightforward and I like how unique the storybook assignment is. It is very different from any assignment I have done in my years of going to school. I also like all of the different options for extra credit; they all look very interesting, especially Wikipedia Trails. Daily studying Wikipedia Commons

My Thoughts on Growth Mindset

Image
While I have heard of growth mindset before, this was the first time I have heard of Carol Dweck. I do agree with the growth mindset thinking but I do not think it would work well implemented in a school setting. My main concern with it, and it's something that was brought up in Paunesku's article, is how growth mindset and fixed mindset can be used as a label for the student's performance. What I got from the TED Talk was that growth mindset, such as using "not yet," can take the place of traditional grading systems in public schools. In my opinion, using "not yet" or something similar for students that are not doing well in school would just end up being another label. It'll eventually devolve into what we have now where there is a negative connotation attached to failing, or in this case, not being ready. That said, I think the growth mindset of thinking is a great idea, just as a personal way of thinking. Instead of having it hard-implemented i

Introduction to Russell Westbrook's Biggest Fan

Image
Hello! My name is Anthony Hui and I am a Junior Biomedical Engineering, Pre-Med major from Edmond, Oklahoma. My hobbies include running and watching basketball but if there is one thing you should know about me, it's that I am a HUGE Oklahoma City Thunder fan. To illustrate how big of a fan I am, the only times I have cried in the past 5 years or so was when the Thunder blew a 3-1 lead against the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, when Russell Westbrook got traded away from the Thunder, and the tribute video the Thunder made for Russ on his first game in OKC as an opponent. Some little fun facts about me: I play the piano and viola, I can never get tired of eating pasta, and I have a little pomeranian named Mowgli (I say little but he's like nine years old). My music taste is kind of all over the place but I'd say I enjoy listening to rap the most. I don't really have any favorite food but I predominately only eat rice, chicken, and broccoli when I

Storybook Favorites: Epics of India

Image
My three favorite storybooks from the previous semesters were "+image.PR," "Paranormal: The Ayodhya Files," and "HinduLoverOnline." +image.PR The first storybook that caught my attention was "+image.PR." The story was a creative application of Shakti which is not evident by the title. Prior to reading the introduction, I did not know what Shakti was. I really liked how creative this storybook was. The design of it was like a website with four tabs: Home, About Us, Introduction, and Stories. This grabbed my attention and made me want to explore the storybook more. Another thing that I really liked with the layout was how the about us tab defined what Shakti was since the introduction did not really give the opportunity to define it. The layout of the introduction was a conversation between Rama and the PR intern that was giving them the tour of the facility. This style of introducing the topic was very creative and did a good job of setting t

My Favorite Place: Toronto

Image
Canada, specifically Toronto, has a very special place in my heart. It was where I lived for the first 6 years of my life and I have many fond memories of this city. The beautiful city of Toronto Toronto Skyline One of the biggest things that Toronto takes pride in is their diverse population and there is no better evidence than this than the food. You can get traditional Indian food for lunch and go right down the street afterwards for a Chinese sponge cake or Dulce de Leche. There is also so many attractions in Toronto that can appeal to almost anyone. You can see classic landmarks such as Niagara Falls or the C.N. Tower. If you are into sports, there is the Hockey Hall of Fame or you can watch one of the various Toronto sports teams, such as the Raptors. There are world-famous exhibits, such as the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum. If you are into animals, there is also the Toronto Zoo. Who can forget the Entertainment District where you can watch the lat
