Week 2 Story: Goblin City

Author's note: This is an alternate retelling of the "Goblin City" in terms of Jalen Hurts and the University of Alabama football team.

University of Alabama's Football Stadium

In the faraway city named Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a high school football recruit and some of his friends crash landed at an unknown location that some call the University of Alabama or Bama for short. The female goblin, named Nick Saban, and his staff of goblins wanted those football players so bad, especially the captain Jalen Hurts. Saban and his staff convinced Jalen and his friends to stay in Bama. To do so, he created an illusion of happiness and prosperity. All of the football players seemed so excited and Saban put thoughts of winning multiple championships in Jalen's mind. This convinced Jalen so he decided to stay. Jalen had a lot of success early on and was extremely happy. One night, he noticed, however, that Saban was frequently missing. At night, he decided to sneak out of his dorm and found Saban at the facilities. There, he was training a bunch of young recruits and he heard Saban say...

"They're scum, they're scum"

"Can't win a natty with those bums"

Jalen was horrified and quickly ran back to his dorm. The next morning, he told his teammates what he saw. "Trust me," Jalen said, "All of us are getting replaced." Some of them believed him while others didn't. Those that believed Jalen knew they had to leave Bama now. Luckily, a fairy who also hated Bama, was scheming on how to take revenge on them. His name was Lincoln Riley and when he heard of the distressed players in Tuscaloosa, he knew he had to save them. "Go," said Lincoln to his trusted steed the Sooner Schooner, "Go and rescue those players." So the magic wagon that can talk approaches Jalen and the players and asked them, "Do you want to get away from Bama?" "Yes," they said, "Take us to a place that'll give us playing time." So the Sooner Schooner took these players away to a magical place called the Transfer Portal where they will reach their respective homes. Later that night, the players that stayed behind all got replaced by Saban and rode the bench forever.

  1. Hi Anthony!

This story is actually really funny! I liked how you made this story applicable to OU football! I like the rhyme as well, very creative. I actually wish it was kind of longer—that is how much I enjoyed it. I love it when people take old stories and give a modern twist to it in their own perspective. It is kind of like when artists sample music (any sample with Ms. Lauryn Hill will always be a good one)! I really don't know why but that stuff gets me really excited

  2. Anthony,

This story made me laugh. I thought it was really creative. The best parts? It made complete sense based on how college football has actually played out and it tied to the story perfectly. I love that you made Lincoln Riley a fairy. And the Schooner can talk? Super creative. I'm excited to read your next story. Based on your intro, I have to ask- how long will it be before you write a story about Russell Westbrook?

  3. Hi Anthony,
I know nothing about sports, so I had to do some background research. Hurts’ story actually seems to fit the “Goblin City” story very well, so you did a great job picking this out. I loved how you made it really fit into our OU culture by making the Sooner Schooner the thing that rode them away. I also love that you didn’t change the names of anything. Lincoln Riley is a fairy and Nick Saban is a female goblin. I love it.
