Introduction to Russell Westbrook's Biggest Fan

Hello! My name is Anthony Hui and I am a Junior Biomedical Engineering, Pre-Med major from Edmond, Oklahoma. My hobbies include running and watching basketball but if there is one thing you should know about me, it's that I am a HUGE Oklahoma City Thunder fan. To illustrate how big of a fan I am, the only times I have cried in the past 5 years or so was when the Thunder blew a 3-1 lead against the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, when Russell Westbrook got traded away from the Thunder, and the tribute video the Thunder made for Russ on his first game in OKC as an opponent. Some little fun facts about me: I play the piano and viola, I can never get tired of eating pasta, and I have a little pomeranian named Mowgli (I say little but he's like nine years old). My music taste is kind of all over the place but I'd say I enjoy listening to rap the most. I don't really have any favorite food but I predominately only eat rice, chicken, and broccoli when I am at college if that helps put my food tastes in perspective haha. One thing that I enjoy doing is campus involvement. I am decently involved in various organizations across campus and I believe it is very important for a student to at least find one organization they want to join. College is such a unique experience and after those 4 or so years are up and you graduate, you will never get to experience anything like college again. So it would be a waste to spend all of your time studying in your room.

The greatest basketball player of all time

As for something more serious, I have not thought too much about my future plans but I plan on taking the MCAT this March and hopefully get a good enough score to be accepted into medical school. I do not know exactly what I want to do after medical school but I am leaning towards either general surgery or oncology. Since I'll be in school for god knows how long, I'll have plenty of time to think about what I want to do haha.

Thanks for taking your time to read this! :)

  1. Ohhhh, how great that you have a dog named Mowgli; that sounds very sweet, Anthony! The author of the Jungle Book was born in India, Rudyard Kipling... if you want to read the original Jungle Book as an extra reading project for class, that would be very do-able; I can definitely imagine some kind of mash-up between the epics and Jungle Book where the epic heroes could run into Mowgli in the jungle! Here's the Jungle Book online if you are curious, and there's a sequel too: Second Jungle Book. Yay for free books online!

  2. Hello Anthony! That sounds like an intense major. I have a friend that just got into medical school, and man is she exhausted right now! I wish you the best of luck.
Also, I like that you posted a picture of Russ, but not your dog lol. I'm impressed by your loyalty. I feel like a lot of people stopped being a fan of Russ after he left the Thunder. I'm not exactly a basketball fan, but I end up watching the games when I bar tend. Looks like they've been having a decent season, even with all the changes. I look forward to your stories!

  3. Hey Anthony! Anytime I hear about someone that is pre-med I am super impressed. I'm glad to hear you're a Thunder fan, I too love the Thunder! I'm not going to lie, I miss Russ a lot and it stings a bit to see him in a Rockets uniform. I've actually been very impressed with how we have been playing this season; it makes me excited for when we get a couple more pieces. I have to say, along with Russ I'm really missing Paul George. I always thought he was the smoothest player in the NBA. I think him and Kawhi are a pretty disgusting duo on the clippers. Anyways, it was nice to meet you man! I'm looking forward to reading your stories over the course of the semester.

  4. Hi Anthony! Nice to hear that you're a big Thunder fan! I've never been to one of their games, but my brother has, and he said that it was super fun. And I'm a big pasta fan too! I don't know if you've tried Victoria's, but their pasta is amazing. Their lasagna is one of the best I've ever had, but my favorite dish there is the Chicken Parmesan. Good luck on the MCAT too! I've had a lot of friends take in the past, and they all say Kaplan is a big resource that helped them. Good luck in this class and for this semester!

  5. Hey Anthony, as a native Houstonian and Rockets fan I have to disagree with you– Russell Westbrook is in fact the second greatest basketball player of all time behind the Beard himself. But I'm also a Thunder fan, and I look forward to seeing them regrow into a powerhouse once again. I wish you the best of luck in your path to medical school. I always wanted to do biomedical engineering (by far the coolest major in existence), but I didn't have the brains for it. Maybe you can 3D print a new one for me in the future!

  6. Hey Anthony!

I am a pre-med student as well. Kudos to you on doing biomedical engineering! I don't think I have perseverance to withstand getting an engineering degree as well as an MD/DO. Not to mention all those years of calculus (Sequences and Series are a nightmare). I think it's really great that you are involved in different organizations. I spent the first two years of undergrad cooped up in my room or in the library and I deeply, deeply regret it. Hope everything goes well in all your future endeavors!

  7. Hi Anthony, nice to meet you. I love to run too, it's my favorite way to de-stress so I make it a point to run (or do some physical activity) each day. Unfortunately, I'm not the biggest basketball girl so a lot of what you referenced I did not understand, haha. But I can tell you definitely enjoy the game! Good luck with medical school and on the MCAT, its a tough journey but it'll be worth it!

  8. Hi Anthony! I think I should begin by telling you that I am from Houston, so I am a Houston Rockets fan. I was also upset by that trade but from the viewpoint that we lost CP3 :( I do love Westbrook though as I have heard a lot about the OKC Thunders from my time at OU. Good luck with the MCAT!

  9. Good luck on your MCAT Anthony, I can't imagine what a crazy ride your education must feel like if you go to medical school. Medicine would have definitely been fun for me to study I think, but I already had a background in computers and didn't want to be in school very long, so computer science it was. I am glad there are others out there willing to take on the challenges of the field!

  10. Anthony,

I got a good laugh out of your shameless plug at the end. Hui Hefner? That's comedy gold. You seem like a really funny and genuine guy. Using "haha" really made that fact shine through.
It sounds like you're a pretty hardcore basketball fan. I've been getting a bit more into it myself in the past few months. The death of a dynasty always seems to bring in a fresh wave of fans. Personally, I've been interested in basketball for a while, but I couldn't bring myself to watch since everyone knew the Warriors would make it to the finals.
I hope you're enjoying the season, even without Russ.
    It's nice to meet you!

  11. Hi Anthony!
I was excited to see another basketball fan in this class but then I saw that your a Thunder Fan! Im just kidding (Kinda) but I love NBA basketball. Im from Dallas so I'm a big mavs fan and I will never forget winning the championship in 2011. I'm currently a business student so I dont know much about medical school except about how hard it is so good luck! Also good luck on your MCAT

  12. Hi Anthony!
I don't follow professional basketball too closely (I'm more into baseball) but as a Houstonian I do root for the Rockets which now includes Russell Westbrook. I wish you the best of luck on your MCAT and your many years of future schooling. Also you should definitely add a picture of Mowgli. Appease the people, show us the cute dog!

  13. Hi Anthony,
I am so glad you love Russell Westbrook so much! I too am a biased Thunder fan, but he deserves the praise! As many people dog him for his iso-ball approach on the court, I think he is one of the best basketball players and athletes I have watched in my lifetime! I enjoyed your intro, and good luck in all your future endeavors!

  14. Hey Anthony! I must start off by saying Thunder Up! I’ve also been a huge Thunder fan for a while although I can happily say I’m not rooting for the Houston Rockets while we pick up the pieces. I’m also a Junior here but I differ a bit in that I am a Chemistry Major! I’ve been working towards applying to medical school, but I find myself enjoying what I’m doing currently, so we’ll see how that pans out. Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself! Here’s to hoping we make the playoffs this year!

  15. Hi Anthony,

You made me laugh out loud when you stated that you can never get tired of pasta, but claimed you don't have a favorite food! Don't knock chicken, rice, and broccoli. You're getting in your protein, grains, and veggies every day! That's more than most college students could say. What groups are you involved in on campus? I agree that finding a place to get involved is so important in college. It's also important to find a civic group to work with when you graduate and find a city to settle down in.

    Thanks for sharing!

  16. Hi Anthony! Chicken, rice and broccoli is cheap and healthy! You're doing better than me, as I eat Sonic all the time because I keep forgetting to go to the grocery store.Since it is March when I am writing this, good luck on the MCAT! Hopefully you can figure out what you want to focus on in the medical field soon; I imagine that will give you a leg up on the competition to get into med school

  17. Hey Anthony,
I love chicken rice and broccoli too!! In fact I had it today for dinner. Actually... I have been having it at least 3-4 times a week for one of my meals for the last few months. Also, now that we're in March, I wish you the best of luck on your exam. I plan on taking it myself in June, and I am really anxious for it, so I can only imagine how you feel; I wish you the best of luck on that. Also, I think it's great you have such a dedication for such a great team such as the Thunder! I never got super involved with team sports like that as a fan, but I feel like I am missing out with the way you described your interest in it!

  18. Hi Anthony! Small world! I was also born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma. I love being from Edmond because I feel like it is the perfect distance from my parents-- not too short, but not too long. That is awesome that you like the Thunder so much! Last week, I went to a game to see them play the Spurs. It was such a great night, and I am so grateful for the team and all they have brought for the city of OKC. Good luck this year!

  19. Hi Anthony!

I love the title of your introduction it made me laugh! I also LOVE pasta!! I cannot stop eating the carbs lol!! Getting involved at OU is a great way to meet people and to feel like you belong somewhere. I hope you still got to take your MCAT and passed with flying colors! You seem like great person and I can wait to read what you write for this class!

  20. Hi Anthony!
I am a huge thunder fan too! I still have nightmares of that game six. I haven't been able to go back and watch it. Sorry that with you being a huge Russ fan that he got traded. I got emotional for him return video as well. On the bright side for the thunder, they look like they are set up for a bright future with SGA and the truck load of picks for the future!

  21. Hey Anthony!
Your major sounds very hard yet very interesting. I know for me personally science is a struggle, so I commend you on your knowledge about it. I do agree college is a very unique experience, so you need to take advantage of the time you have here. I am also a big thunder fan and I agree it was disheartening every time we lost in the playoffs. I hope your semester goes well.

  22. Hi Anthony, my husband loves basketball and the thunder as well, but I just cannot get into it. It might be silly, but the squeaking shoes drives me crazy. Hopefully you can look past this for me. I can play the piano too, but it’s been awhile and I have always had trouble with my left hand playing at the same time. I love that you called your dog little even though he is nine. I call mine a toddler because he acts like he’s two but he’s also nine. - Jillienne
