Reading Notes: Ramayana Part 2
Sugriva and Hanuman, Geraldine Hodgson
Hanuman, messenger of Sugriva disguised himself as a beggar and went up to Rama and Lakshmana and asked why they were walking through the woods with so many weapons. When they didn't answer, he told them who he was and Rama was delighted. Lakshmana explained what happened and Hanuman, seeing how Sugriva was in the same situation and asked Rama if they can accompany him and Sugriva to their home country.
Sugriva's Story, Geraldine Hodgson
Sugriva explained his story and his history with Vali. Rama, hearing this, was angry and wanted to avenge Sugriva so he begged to fight Vali.
Sugriva and Vali, Romesh Dutt
Tara, Vali's wife begs him not to fight Sugriva when she finds out that he befriended Rama. Vali ignored it though and intends to fight them.
Vali's Death, Romesh Dutt
Vali and Sugriva fight to the death. But during the fight, Rama (who was hiding), shot a dart at Vali and killed him.

Tara grieves over Vali's death. Even Sugriva, seeing his brother dead, was a little upset. The high monkeys also grieve. Sugriva is then made king in Vali's stead.

Sugriva promised to help Rama find Sita but only until the rainy season ends. Rama goes on a rant about how he has to wait.

Rainy season was ending but Sugriva was still sitting on his ass so Rama says that he will kill him if he doesn't raise an army and help him retrieve Sita

The monkey armies searched for a month but still cannot find Sita but they did find Sampati, who is Jatayu's brother, and he told them that Sita is in Lanka

The monkeys are wondering how to get to Lanka to confirm that Sita is there so they got this monkey named Hanuman to go. Hanuman didn't want to but Jambavan, a bear, told Hanuman of the great powers he had so Hanuman went.

Hanuman sneaks into Lanka by transforming into a cat but no matter where he explored, he couldn't find Sita. He even went to Ravana's palace and were Ravana's bedroom was but all he could see were other women and not Sita so he thought she must be dead.

Hanuman finally found Sita in Ashoka Grove being guarded by rakshasis.

Ravana comes to Sita and tries to woo her to leave Rama but Ravana would still not go with him so Ravana gave her a two month period. If she doesn't come with him, she will be tortured to death.

Hanuman meets Sita and says that he can save her but she said she refuses to be touched by any man that isn't Rama but she gives him a hair jewel as a token.

Hanuman was not satisfied only finding Sita so he trashes the Ashoka Grove and nearby pavilions. The guards were sent to subdue him but he fought and killed each one until Ravana's son, Indrajit was sent to fight him. Nothing Indrajit was doing was working so he devised a plan to use a Brahma shaft. Hanuman figured it's a good idea to talk to Ravana so he pretended to be captured.

Hanuman tells Ravana that he will die against Rama so he should just let Sita go but Ravana get angry and decides to set Hanuman's tail on fire instead of killing him.
Lanka Burning, Sister Nivedita
Hanuman asked the guards, while his tail was on fire, if he can be led around Lanka so that he can repent. They do that and he breaks free of his shackles and runs around Lanka, setting it on fire. Hanuman then goes to the grove where Sita is and tells him that he will bring Rama with him as fast as he can. He then escapes Lanka back to the other monkeys.

Hanuman goes back to Sugriva and Rama and tells them where Sita is. They then raise an army and marched to Lanka.

Ravana's court talks about whether they should just give Rama back Sita but decided ultimately to fight because that is what Ravana would want.

Ravana's younger brother Vibhishana is the only one to tell Ravana to return Sita but Ravana gets super angry so Vibhishana leaves to ally himself with Rama
