Reading Notes: Mahabharata B

Mahabharata Online: Public Domain Edition

Vidura, the brother of Pandu and Dhritarashtra, found out about Duryodhana's plot with the wooden castle. So he told Kunti and the Pandavas and then he dug a secret tunnel from the castle to a forest so they can escape. On that night, the captain Purochana set the castle on fire but the Pandavas and Kunti escaped. Bhima then decided to take revenge on the captain by setting the guard house on fire, thus killing them. It also happened that a poor beggar woman and her kids approached the Pandavas for food that night, which they gave them. The woman and her kids though fell asleep in the castle and perished in the flames. That morning, people found their remains and thought it was Kunti and the Pandavas and grieved but Duryodhana thought his plan had succeeded and celebrated with the king.

Draupadi exiled

The Pandavas and Kunti go back to living in the wilderness, which is full of dangerous stuff. A rakshasa woman fell in love with Bhima and tried to warn him of her brother, Hidimba, who was out to kill him. She tried to get them to escape with her but Bhima refused instead saying that he can beat Hidimba. Hidimba heard this and challenged Bhima so they started to fight.

Bhima kills Hidimba and Hidimbi, the rakshasa woman, follows the Pandavas. Eventually, Bhima and Hidimbi gets married and they have a rakshasa kid named Ghatotkacha. Hidimbi and Ghatotkacha leaves and says they will come to the Pandavas' aid whenever they want.

The Pandavas and Kunti, dressed as Brahmin beggars, arrives at a town called Ekachakra, where they were given a house. While there, they overheard some people crying about this guy named Baka that conquered Ekachakra. He was cruel and demanded that every week they have to send him food: a cartful of rice, two buffaloes, and a man or woman from one of the townspeople's houses. Kunti then said that Bhima can defeat him. Bhima then goes to where Baka is and kills him. The townspeople are super grateful now.

Some guy came to the city and told the Pandavas about Drupada's son and daughter who were born from fire. The son was named Dhrishtadyumna and the daughter Draupadi. The son was destined to destroy Drona and increase the fame of the Panchalas while the daughter was destined to be the chief of all women. So Kunti and her sons journey to where the Panchalas are, meeting other people along the way, eventually gathering a troop of Brahmins. Secretly though, all the Pandava brothers wanted to win the daughter's heart.

Random backstory on Draupadi's past life as Nalayani. Nalayani's original husband abandoned her so she prayed to the gods for a husband. The god gave her five husbands and she was like why though but then she said if you're gonna give me that many husbands, at least give me eternal virginity which the god granted.

Drupada wanted Draupadi to marry Arjuna based on the swayamvara so he held a tournament where the person who shoots an arrow through a wheel and hits the golden fish will get Draupadi. Karna showed up and people were afraid that he was gonna get it but then Draupadi said she won't marry a peasant and Karna walked away but not before saying that he totally could've hit it. Arjuna walks up and nails the golden fish so Draupadi and him end up getting married.

Draupadi's karma from her other life comes back and she ends up marrying all five of the Pandava brothers.

Duryodhana finds out that the Pandavas were still alive and allied themselves with Drupada so a council was held and they decided on peace. The Pandavas were invited back and were given a country to rule over, which they named Indraprashtha.

The brothers had a rule that if any of them were sitting with Draupadi, none of the other brothers can walk in on them or else they'd be exiled for 12 years. Arjuna accidentally broke that rule so he exiled himself even though his brother said it was fine. While exiled, Arjuna ran into Ulupi, who was the daughter of the king of the nagas. She fell in love with him, they had a son called Iravat, and Arjuna was given the power to turn invisible in water.

One day when Arjuna was walking, he found some people by the river who said there are some ferocious alligators there. Arjuna, using his new water powers, dragged the alligators onto land and they turned into beautiful water nymphs who asked for his help to turn her sisters, who are also alligators, back into water nymphs. Arjuna then started dragging alligators.

Arjuna wandered into a city called Manipur where the king has a beautiful daughter named Chitra. Arjuna married her on the condition that their son stays in Manipur to become the next heir (since the king doesn't have a son). Arjuna agreed, they have a son, and Arjuna leaves.

Arjuna then wandered to Prabhasa which is Krishna's hometown. There, he fell in love with his sister Subhadra. She was originally promised to go to Duryadhana but Krishna advised Arjuna to take her with force and said that men applaud people for abducting wives. So Arjuna abducted her, took her back to Indraprashtha, and they end up having a son called Abhimanyu.

Arjuna and Krishna go on an adventure when the fire god Agni approached them during a party at Indraprashtha about wanting to eat the Khandava forest. Indra, however, wouldn't let him eat it. Arjuna and Krishna agreed to fight Indra only if Agni got them celestial weapons so they did and Agni burned up the forest. Only six animals escaped: the snake Ashwasena, a son of Takshaka; four birds; and the demon Maya, who was the son of a rishi.

Maya was grateful to Arjuna for saving his life so he decided to build a palace to honor the Pandavas which makes Duryadhana even more jealous.

Yudhishthira declared himself a supreme monarch by performing a Rajasuya sacrifice so he goes to fight Jarasandha, a rival king who rules over Magadha. Krishna also ends up fighting Shishupala, the King of Chedi. Both of them won.

Duryodhana was extremely jealous and wanted to beat them but he knew he couldn't do so in an open conflict. Shakuni, prince of Gandhara, suggested gambling with them since members of the royal caste cannot refuse a gamble with someone from a lower caste. They bet on some dice game and Shakuni challenged Yudhishthira and Yudhishthira lost. He then started betting on all of his belongings, his friends, himself, and even Draupadi. He kept playing despite losing so he lost everything. Duryodhana then got Draupadi since Yudhishthira bet her and lost.

Draupadi rants about what happened.

There's an assembly hall and Duhshasana made fun of Draupadi. Karna and Shakuni was laughing but Bhima was super pissed and said that he'd kill them if they ran into them in heaven.

Dhritarashtra was super pissed and Draupadi told him to free Karna, Bhima, and all those guys but not herself. Duryodhana was upset that the princes just walked free and asked Dhritarashtra to bring the Pandavas back. He did but not before Yudhishthira played another dice game with Shakuni and lost so Duryodhana gets a kingdom. Bhima was super pissed and told Duhshasana that he'll kill him if they meet again. The bros are then exiled.
